Steve Harris has been working in the marine insurance industry as both underwriter and broker for over 45 years. For 13 years, he was a marine hull & liability underwriter on lead syndicates at Lloyds of London, followed by 7 years as the Assistant marine hull underwriter at the Cornhill Insurance Company (now Allianz) in London. In 1994 he was invited to join Marsh (then Sedgwick) to manage a portfolio of marine business and to provide training, initially for internal staff, but quickly expanding to provide training for insurers, clients, as the reputation of his marine insurance training became more widely known. The 5 day Marsh marine insurance courses in the UK, now have to be run 4 times each year to simply cope with demand. In addition, shorter length, bespoke courses are run in many locations around the world. In Singapore, Steve is a regular marine insurance lecturer for the Singapore College of Insurance, and has run numerous very successful courses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Xiamen, Beijing, and Hangzhou, as well as extensively in the USA, South America, other SE Asian countries, Australia and Africa, either for Marsh or for their clients or for our sister company Guy Carpenter. Nevertheless, Steve is still active in London market broking, having developed and managed one of the first marine insurance e-trading platforms (Broker 21) which was successful for a number of years and he is often asked to advise on industry matters. He has authored numerous papers and magazine articles that are widely quoted internationally on specific issues within the marine insurance or maritime spheres, such as Arctic and hydrographic concerns, as well as the 2020 MARPOL sulphur cap and the IMO 2021 Cyber Rules.
Stephen also regularly attends the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Polar Regions at Westminster, as well as chairing an industrial advisory board focussed on PhD studies of Big Data management, for Cranfield, Cambridge, Birmingham and Newcastle universities.
