This session will explore how insurers and brokers can play their part in supporting the marine markets in the Nordics as they develop their ESG principles. |

Conservative estimates from casualty investigations suggest that at least 25% of all marine casualties are caused by fatigue. Fatigue is a symptom of many common medical conditions driven by physical, psychological, social and spiritual factors. Since 2016, Marine Benefits has surveyed more than 35,000 seafarers to identify these driving factors and to propose actions to reduce seafarer fatigue. In this presentation, they will share their statistics, findings and preventive plans from a holistic perspective. |

Panel Discussion: Autonomous Vessels – Out on Your Own |
Panel Discussion: Loss Prevention – Reducing the Costs |
The idea of a vessel sailing the high seas without anyone on board may seem the stuff of fantasy, but it is fast becoming a very real possibility. There are many stages to go through on the journey towards full automation, however. This session will look at both the opportunities and risks resulting from increasing dependence on technology to drive shipping and asks how the marine insurance sector can play its part as an enabler and as a risk mitigator. |
Marine insureds continue to suffer losses and it remains true that the smaller, attritional losses account for most of the claims. While the market has been doing a good job in reducing the major claims, it continues to face large claims bills each year. This session will look at the market initiatives designed to help insureds, from improving weather information, to crew safety and to cyber, by looking at the existing claims in the market. |

Panel Discussion: Digitalisation – Propelled by Covid-19? |
|
According to a McKinsey Global Survey, companies have accelerated the digitalisation of their customer and supply chain interactions and of their internal operations by three to four years. The share of digital or digitally enabled products in their portfolios has accelerated by an amazing seven years through the Covid-19 pandemic, achieving in a few weeks what had been taking years. The Nordic insurance market has been no different and this session takes a look at how the market has changed, what platforms have been adopted and what the future might look like. |

Presentation: Diminishing Stability in an Ageing Fleet |
|
Weight growth and an increase in the center of gravity (KG) of a vessel through its operation is inevitable. Repairs, refits and modernisations have a tendency to require additional structure and equipment (i.e. weight) high in the ship. The result is diminishing stability margins over the life of a vessel. This session details common indicators and causes of weight growth, current regulations to ensure adequate stability and risks to insurers of ship, cargo and persons onboard that are associated with weight-related stability challenges. |

Presentation: Case Study – The Northguider |
|
The Norwegian Maritime Cyber Resilience Centre (NORMA Cyber) is a newly established initiative that became operational on 1st January 2021. NORMA Cyber works to increase the unified resilience against cyber threats for the Norwegian shipping industry and maritime sector by delivering a system for effective information sharing and a spectrum of proactive services. |
On 28 December 2018, the trawler Northguider grounded in the Hinlopenstretet, the strait between Spitsbergen and Nordauslandet in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. This case study will discuss some of the unique challenges faced by the team to successfully remove the wreck of the Northguider. |

Presentation: The CMA CGM LIBRA: Passage Planning, Unseaworthiness and Cargo Underwriters’ Liability (or Not) for General Average Expenditure |
Panel Discussion: Ship Fires – Putting Out the Fire |
On 17 May 2011, the CMA CGM LIBRA ran aground while departing the Chinese port of Xiamen. The General Average claim by owners against cargo underwriters was some US$13million. 92% of cargo underwriters paid, but 8% refused. The Admiralty Court and Court of Appeal held that the 8% were right to refuse, holding that the vessel was unseaworthy because there was no proper passage plan on board at the commencement of the voyage from Xiamen. In July 2021, the case will be heard by the Supreme Court. John Russell QC discusses the issues that the Supreme Court will have to determine. |
One statistic widely cited across the insurance sector is that on average, there is a fire onboard a container ship every week, with a major container fire occurring on average every 60 days. Despite an overall fall in casualties in the first half of 2020, ten such incidents were still reported. This session looks at some of the common causes of these fires, from misdeclared cargoes to inadequate fire-fighting capabilities on board and considers the role insurers are playing in trying to change the narrative. |

Roundtable Discussion hosted by AdvantageGo:All Aboard for Data Analytics |
|
With the challenges around securing an increase in P&I premiums, reducing exposure in certain areas and static market conditions, insurers seek to drive premium growth and increase market share through portfolio diversification. However, are current platforms and systems fit for purpose and agile enough to enable insurers to improve risk profiling and add new lines of business and products? With many marine insurers operating on legacy platforms, they may be missing out on leveraging data assets and using analytics to improve underwriting decisions and risk selection. Data-driven decision-making is the new frontier for insurers. Today’s tumultuous economy demands insurers to rapidly respond to shifting market needs and assess risk regularly, and with real-time data. This session looks at how algorithmic-based underwriting drives underwriting profitability and efficiencies through using multiple sources of data to maximise data insights, spot new and emerging markets, cross-sell opportunities and consider new business models. We’ll also explore the level of confidence in the technology that underpins insurer’s underwriting decision making and workflows, now and in the future, and if companies are still investing enough to make a genuinely forceful change. Moderator: Thomas Andersson, Director of Sales, AdvantageGo Participants: Lars Dueled, Chief Underwriting Officer, Skuld Sigvald Fossum, Vice President, Head of Analytics, Gard AS Ranjith Kanipayur, Head of Business Transformation, The Shipowners’ Club Harvey Quinn, Client Executive, AdvantageGo Callum Shaw, Pricing Lead, RSA |

Panel Discussion: Market Dynamics – Stability Paying Dividends |
2020 was a challenging year thanks to Covid-19, but also because of the drive to increase insurance rates to sustainable levels. This has continued into 2021 but in the Nordics, the picture has been a little different. As a market in which stability is key, from pricing and claims through to human resources, it has often been the global leader in marine insurance. This session looks at the current picture and considers the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. |

Panel Discussion: Geopolitics and Sanctions – Keeping the Right Side of The Law |
New sanctions are emerging all the time and old sanctions are being re-imposed, all of it creating a legal minefield for shipping and its insurers. With insurers often seen as easy targets by the regulators, how can the sector keep abreast of the changes and on the right side of the law? Shipping necessarily involves long chains of business, creating extra challenges for the insurers creating suitable policies and settling claims. This session will review the latest sanctions rules, including a view on the likely path of the new White House team and look at how insurers can work with their insureds. |
