Are Solum is a Norwegian-qualified lawyer with more than 15 years of experience in the international Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance industry. Throughout his career, he has specialized in cargo claims handling, container shipping, and the management of large and complex maritime casualties.

His expertise includes some of the most challenging issues facing the container shipping industry in particular, including container vessel fires, salvage operations, general average, and loss of containers at sea. He has handled numerous high-profile cases and has developed extensive experience advising shipowners and operators on the legal, operational, and insurance implications of major casualties.

Are has authored a significant number of publications on these topics and has been a frequent speaker at industry conferences, seminars, and international forums, including presentations to bodies associated with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Today, Are serves as Vice President, Denmark at Gard, where he leads Gard’s Danish shipping market team. In this role, he is responsible for client relationships, business development, and the delivery of insurance and advisory services to shipowners and maritime companies operating in one of the world’s most significant maritime markets.
